Tugas Utama BPOM Berdasarkan Pasal 67 Keputusan Presiden Nomor 103 Tahun 2001 adalah melaksanakan tugas pemerintahan di bidang pengawasan Obat dan Makanan sesuai dengan ketentuan peraturan perUndang-Undangan yang berlaku. Sedangkan Tugas Balai Besar/Balai POM (Unit Pelaksana Teknis) Berdasarkan Pasal 2 Peraturan Kepala BPOM Nomor 14 Tahun 2014, Unit Pelaksana Teknis di lingkungan BPOM mempunyai tugas melaksanakan kebijakan dibidang pengawasan obat dan makanan, yang meliputi pengawasan atas produk terapeutik, narkotika, psikotropika, zat adiktif, obat tradisional, kosmetik, produk komplemen serta pengawasan atas keamanan pangan dan bahan berbahaya.

Berdasarakan Pasal 68 Keputusan Presiden Nomor 103 Tahun 2001, BPOM Mempunyai Fungsi :

1. Pengkajian dan penyusunan kebijakan nasional di bidang pengawasan Obat dan Makanan.

2. Pelaksanaan kebijakan tertentu di bidang pengawasan Obat dan Makanan.

3. Koordinasi kegiatan fungsional dalam pelaksanaan tugas BPOM.

4. Pemantauan, pemberian bimbingan dan pembinaan terhadap kegiatan instansi pemerintah di bidang pengawasan Obat dan Makanan.

5. Penyelenggaraan pembinaan dan pelayanan administrasi umum di bindang perencanaan umum, ketatausahaan, organisasi dan tata laksana, kepegawaian, keuangan, kearsipan, persandian, perlengkapan dan rumah tangga.

Sementara Fungsi Balai Besar/Balai POM (Unit Pelaksana Teknis) Berdasarkan Pasal 3 Peraturan Kepala BPOM Nomor 14 Tahun 2014, Unit Pelaksana Teknis di lingkungan BPOM mempunyai fungsi :

1. Penyusunan rencana dan program pengawasan obat dan makanan.

2. Pelaksanaan pemeriksaan secara laboratorium, pengujian dan penilaian mutu produk terapetik, narkotika, psikotropika zat adiktif, obat tradisional, kosmetik, produk komplemen, pangan dan bahan berbahaya.

3. Pelaksanaan pemeriksaanlaboratorium, pengujian dan penilaian mutu produk secara mikrobiologi.

4. Pelaksanaan pemeriksaan setempat, pengambilan contoh dan pemeriksaan sarana produksi dan distribusi

5. Investigasi dan penyidikan pada kasus pelanggaran hukum.

6. Pelaksanaan sertifikasi produk, sarana produksi dan distribusi tertentu yang ditetapkan oleh Kepala Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan

7. Pelaksanaan kegiatan layanan informasi konsumen.

8. Evaluasi dan penyusunan laporan pengujian obat dan makanan.

9. Pelaksanaan urusan tata usaha dan kerumahtanggaan.

10. Pelaksanaan tugas lain yang ditetapkan oleh Kepala Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan, sesuai dengan bidang tugasnya.

Jenis Nomor Pendaftaran Biasanya ketika kita mendaftarkan produk ke BPOM kita akan dilabelin dengan kode SP,MD atay ML baik untuk produk makanan, minuman, obat-obatan maupun kosmetik. Label SP kependekan daro Sertifikat Penyuluhan yang merupakan momor pendaftaran yang diberikan kepada para pengusaha kecil dengan modal dan pengawas yang diberikan oleh Dinas Kesehatan /Kodya sebatas penyuluhan. Sedangkan label MD diberikan produsen makanan atau minuman yang bermodal besar dan diperkirakan mampu untuk mengikuti persyaratan keamanan pangan yang telah ditetapkan oleh pemerintah. Sementara label ML untuk produk makanan dan minuman olahan yang berasal dari produk impor baik berupa kemasan langsung maupun yang dikemas ulang.
